Asleep by this Hour
I’ve taped up the old pictures, the photos we used to know
There’s a life I once lived, and now restless, comes & goes
I’ve found a fan in the basement, and I expect another war
But Mr. President is asleep by this hour
So right now there ain’t anything worth worrying over
The summer heat has been looking, and I’ve found something
In spray paint on the wall of the building that they’re wrecking
And I wish my art were that simple, like tides, leaves, and stones
But Mr. Andy Goldsworthy is asleep by this hour
So right now all his sculptures will just have to know
These days I’ve been searching for a savior high & low
Because there’s something about living that I can’t do on my own
And I’m trying to find my better self in a country I lost in my pocket
But the ghost of Jesus christ is asleep by this hour
So right now some Bible verses are the best I can get
Sometimes I think my heart’s an ocean
And my love is as ceaseless as the waves
But sometimes I think my heart’s an ocean
And I just lost the boat that was paddling the way
I’ve been sewing my clothes and restringing my guitar
It’s been raining, I been praying that we’ll all know nature again
And that when I die I’ll be satisfied there’s hope in a new generation
But my unconceived children are asleep by this hour
So right now I’ll just dream with them till tomorrow begins
